Our story:
Since 1957, Harwood Center has provided educational and therapeutic services to children with developmental disabilities. Our mission: to enable children with special needs reach their full potential. Harwood is one of the few companies in West Tennessee with a two-year national Behavior Health Center of Excellence (BHCOE) accreditation. Thanks to our wonderful partnership with the University of Memphis, we opened a new 8,000 square foot building in 2022 to provide training, research and therapy to children with special needs.
The need:
Although the cause remains unknown, autism spectrum disorder is one of the fastest growing developmental disorders in the country, now affecting 1 in 36 children. The number of children diagnosed with ASD compared to other disabilities in Tennessee experienced an increase of 20.8 percent. We have more than 100 children on our waitlist.
It costs Harwood between $24,000-$30,000 annually to serve one child, so we rely on donations and grants to help us support children. Without our services, children on our waitlist go without evidence-based therapy that can improve their overall quality of life.
